77% of registered enterprises are in services while 23% are in manufacturing. Only 3% of employment is in small and medium enterprises. Only 55% of school-age children are enrolled in higher secondary school (classes 9–12). Only 9% of ITI trainers are certified.
In Dumka, which ranks 14 of 24 in Jharkhand for youth opportunity, the overall opportunity score is 44.4 out of 100. It trails the national picture on ITI seats in government institutes at 49.7%. On skilling trainees who get certified at 98.9%, it sits close to the national mark.
