What is the JSS (Jan Shikshan Sansthan)?

A Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) is a government-funded community institution that provides skill training to people left out of the formal education and training system -- school dropouts, neo-literates, women who never went to school, and unemployed youth from marginalised communities. JSSs offer short vocational courses (typically 2-6 months) in trades such as tailoring, beauty culture, food processing, electrical work, and handicrafts. They are run by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that receive grants from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). Not every district has a JSS -- there are approximately 294 nationally.
