1,450 jobs have been generated through self-employment loans in South 24 Parganas. 55.1% of jobs overall are self-employment, close to the typical district. The D-JAY(S) Urban Livelihoods unit works this ground, helping urban youth set up and sustain small enterprises.
71% of registered enterprises are in services while 29% are in manufacturing. Only 4% of employment is in small and medium enterprises. 77% of school-age children are enrolled in higher secondary school (classes 9–12).
In South 24 Parganas, which ranks 16 of 23 in West Bengal for youth opportunity, the overall opportunity score is 43.5 out of 100. On women-owned enterprises at 30%, it sits close to the national mark. The district has 1,28,911 registered service enterprises.
