About a fifth of India's people are between 15 and 29. The shape of their working lives — who is in the labour force, who has a regular wage job, who is stuck in casual work, and what sector employs them — varies sharply across the country.
India has 36 states and union territories and roughly eight hundred districts. Of a total population of about 140.13 crore, 41.24 crore are between 15 and 29.
Population-weighted labour force participation across India is 62.4%. unemployment is 3.5%. 22.7% of working young people hold regular jobs, 56.3% are self-employed, and 21.0% work in casual employment. agriculture employs 52.1% of the workforce, construction 9.5%, and apparel and textiles 6.7%. the EPFO-covered formal sector accounts for about 11% of the labour force. MSMEs employ around 9.89 crore people across the country.
Highest labour force participation is in Himachal Pradesh (76.9%), Sikkim (76.7%), Chhattisgarh (75.1%). Lowest is in Lakshadweep (50.1%), Delhi (50.9%), Bihar (52.9%).
The highest share of regular wage employment among young workers is in Chandigarh (73.7%), Dadra And Nagar Haveli And Daman And Diu (68%), Delhi (59.2%); the lowest is in Bihar (9.3%), Jharkhand (13.4%), Uttar Pradesh (13.7%).
